Strong-hearted stories, dark & funny

47. WRITING THE CHILD CEPHALINA

March 30th 2017:- Today I spent a few hours working out how to make a reaction by one of the characters credible. It seemed as I wrote it that there was nothing in the background of the story which would indicate that she would be willing to consider a particular idea that comes up in the story and is pivotal. So I had to go back to the beginning chapters and find a natural place for the subject to have arisen between the two characters involved, and weave it into the dialogue. Now what she says makes much better sense. Had I not done that, it would’ve been truly lazy of me. I think this is all about logic. The character’s reaction would have been less than logical without the piece I inserted. I always try to keep in mind the story’s logic and the characters motivations, although it’s sometimes easy to forget those aspects of writing, and blunder on. I have not yet written about ectoplasm, just coming up to it, but the photo below is of a tired out medium and her ‘spirit guide’ which seems to be made of cardboard, or something built around a house broom. Wicked.
